Back-to-School Help Needed

Post date: Aug 9, 2013 5:45:54 PM

New and returning Mound families,

I hope you’ve all had a wonderful summer! I can’t believe it’s already August! I wanted to let you know about a few needs that will really help the back-to-school weeks run smoothly:

Teacher Prep Days, August 15&16. Teachers are only given three paid preparation days before the first day of school. In reality, we know our dedicated teachers have been volunteering their time well before those prep days, so their rooms can be ready to welcome our children on the first day of school. In support of their commitment, the PTO is again organizing parent volunteers to help with photocopying, collating, cutting, stapling, gluing, laminating, etc. during their prep days. If you have an hour or two (or more!) to spare please sign up to help out. Please choose a shift that will allow you to help on campus without your child(ren). Note that classrooms will be off-limits during prep days, so the teachers can work without disruptions. Volunteers will provide support in the workroom and cafeteria and by laminating at the VUSD office on Stanley Ave.

Traffic & Crossing Help needed for first week. The safety of our students is our top priority, and the traffic situation before and after school can get a little chaotic, especially the first week with new families going through the traffic flow for the first time. We like to add a couple of volunteers on the K-1 circle during just the first week to ensure a smooth flow, help kids in and out of their cars, and point them in the right direction. In addition, to ensure the safety of our students, it's vital that we have parent volunteers monitor the crosswalk at the exit of the big parking lot, ensuring that students don't cross the driveway unprotected, and that we have a volunteer monitor the Brookshire crosswalk in the morning (a staff member monitors it after school). These volunteer roles are in addition to our City-provided Crossing Guard who monitors pedestrians crossing Hill Rd from the overpass. Brief training provided.

Lunch Recess Helpers needed for first week. Help the noon aides get the new school year off to a fun and safe start! Help guide the first graders through their first week of recess, teach some games, and remind the older students how to be safe and friendly on the playground. Brief training provided. Opportunities to continue volunteering throughout the year also available. Great way to squeeze in a little fresh air and exercise too!

Salad Bar Helpers needed! Are you all about healthy eating? Then this is the opportunity for you! Salad Bar Helpers have the simple but rewarding job of making sure each child that comes through the lunch line takes at least 1/2 cup fruit or veggies from the salad bar (and that they don't put a gallon of ranch dressing on everything!). If we have 4 or more volunteers, shifts can be easily rotated. These positions continue all year, but if you can only help for a while, please go ahead and sign up and we'll find replacements as needed.

K-1 Parents, if you will be dropping off and picking up in the K-1 circle (in front of the cafeteria) please note it is for immediate loading and unloading only:

- you must approach the K-1 circle by driving along the frontage road at the bottom of Brookshire so that you will be turning left into the circle – do not come down Hill Rd from Telegraph to turn right into the parking lot.

- please make sure to pull all the way forward so that several cars can unload at a time and do not walk away from your car.

- When you exit the K-1 circle, you will turn right and exit via the frontage road.

- If you will be walking your child to the classroom, or don’t want to enter/exit via the frontage road, you may either park (or use the drop-off) in the big parking lot between Balboa and Mound, park along Hill Rd or Woodland St, park in the Brookshire neighborhood behind the school, or park along Webster St and use the pedestrian bridge across Hwy126. Thank you for your consideration and courtesy.

Other needs (please email me if interested):

- Jogathon Committee has lost a few members and needs help with the following:

o Volunteer Coordinator (maintain list of volunteers for each grade level for Jogathon Day) – time commitment is 2 weeks in mid-September, a couple hours each week.

o Event Day Co-Leader (help Jogathon Co-Chair coordinate setup and breakdown of event) – time commitment is Sept. 19 (evening) and Sept. 20 (morning).

- PTO needs a Volunteer Coordinator to help maintain a list of volunteers and update the PTO parking spot sign every 2 weeks. Very minimal time commitment, work from home and via email.

- PTO needs a few more helpers on the Hospitality team (coordinating occasional staff appreciation lunches or parent coffees). Minimal time commitment – approx. 5 events a year.

Finally, I’m excited to share news from the 2013-14 Outdoor Education Committee: Stainless steel water bottles with our Mound logo (see pic below) will be available for purchase at their Back to School Night fundraiser (Sept. 12) and advance purchase will be available during the first weeks of school! Not only do these 17-oz. vacuum bottles have double wall insulation to keep drinks their original temperature, they are also BPA-free, leak proof, and have covered drink spouts. They are expected to be priced at $10 so it's a great, economical and eco-friendly way to make sure your student has water at his/her desk every day! If you want to preorder your bottles, send an email to

See you all on Tuesday, August 20! We’re looking forward to a great year!
